{"id":2707,"date":"2012-01-07T14:38:31","date_gmt":"2012-01-07T19:38:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/judykat.com\/ken-judy\/?p=2707"},"modified":"2012-01-25T00:15:35","modified_gmt":"2012-01-25T05:15:35","slug":"women-software-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/judykat.com\/ken-judy\/women-software-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Are we driving women away from software development?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>These are notes from my presentation at the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) #45 on <strong>Agile values, product innovation and the shortage of women software developers<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve broken the fifty slide, eighteen minute presentation into several posts. <\/p>\n<p>This first part uses existing research to establish:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>women are under-represented in software development,<\/li>\n<li>this is a multi-decade trend atypical of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM),<\/li>\n<li>women are leaving mid-career in disproportionate numbers and<\/li>\n<li>young women are opting out as early as middle and high school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;ll link to my full paper when it is available and to subsequent posts as I publish them.<\/p>\n<p>There is an abundance of research on the problems women face in our field. IEEE Computer Society, 2010, pg. 33<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<h3>(5) Women are underrepresented in Computer Science<\/h3>\n<p>According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, women represent 46% of the workforce but only 25% of software developers. Luce,. \u201cThe Athena Factor.\u201d <em>Harvard Business Review<\/em>, pp. 51, Jun. 2008.<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<h3>(6) Women are leaving mid-career<\/h3>\n<p>Women are leaving IT in larger numbers than men. 56% of women leave mid-career across all technology occupations. 41% leave their careers in \u201chigh technology\u201d compared to only 17% of men. As of 2010, the percentage was still falling despite growing percentages of women graduating from four year colleges. The MIT Press, 2006, pp.55-88.<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<h3>(8) Young Women are disinterested in pursuing high tech education or careers<\/h3>\n<p>The Maryland Adolescent Development in Context Study, a longitudinal study of 1,400 white and african american students found that women were much more likely to have no interested in IT related careers and degrees than men.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\"><a href=\"http:\/\/judykat.com\/ken-judy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Agile-Values-Innovation-and-the-Shortage-of-Women-Software-Developers.009.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/judykat.com\/ken-judy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Agile-Values-Innovation-and-the-Shortage-of-Women-Software-Developers.009.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Agile-Values-Innovation-and-the-Shortage-of-Women-Software-Developers.009\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2716\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>(9) At what cost to the software industry?<\/h3>\n<p>In the last decade, the U.S. software industry represented $200B in annual sales and employed 2.2M software professionals. McKinsey &#038; Co estimates in this decade, demand for mid-career IT professionals will increase by 25% while the available pool will decrease by 15%. This in a country where 71% of workers are in jobs with low demand or an oversupply of eligible candidates.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\"><a href=\"http:\/\/judykat.com\/ken-judy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Agile-Values-Innovation-and-the-Shortage-of-Women-Software-Developers.010.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/judykat.com\/ken-judy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Agile-Values-Innovation-and-the-Shortage-of-Women-Software-Developers.010.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Agile-Values-Innovation-and-the-Shortage-of-Women-Software-Developers.010\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2717\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>(10) The cost of attrition<\/h3>\n<p>And let\u2019s also get at the cost of attrition. According to HR magazine, it costs approximately 100-125% of an employee\u2019s annual salary to replace them.
