{"id":288,"date":"2007-12-19T12:52:59","date_gmt":"2007-12-19T16:52:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/judykat.com\/ken\/2007\/12\/19\/if-it-aint-this-it-aint-scrum\/"},"modified":"2010-09-06T04:21:26","modified_gmt":"2010-09-06T08:21:26","slug":"if-it-aint-this-it-aint-scrum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/judykat.com\/ken-judy\/if-it-aint-this-it-aint-scrum\/","title":{"rendered":"If it ain&#8217;t this, it ain&#8217;t Scrum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/scrum.jeffsutherland.com\/\">Jeff Sutherland<\/a> has an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.infoq.com\/interviews\/jeff-sutherland-scrum-rules\">interview on InfoQ<\/a> where he describes the <a href=\"http:\/\/agileconsortium.blogspot.com\/2007\/12\/nokia-test.html\">Nokia Test<\/a> for evaluating whether a team is practicing Scrum:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Iterative Development<\/strong><br \/>\nA precursor to Scrum is practicing iterative development of any kind.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Fixed iterations of not longer than six [weeks]<sup>1<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Working software at the end of each iteration<\/li>\n<li>Start iterations without requiring a &#8220;complete&#8221; specification<\/li>\n<li>Testing during rather than at the end of iterations<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Jeff states, &#8220;this rules out about half of (self-identified) Scrum teams.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scrum<\/strong><br \/>\nThe minimum to foster self-directed development teams working to clear business priorities using the tracking mechanisms of Scrum.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Got a product owner? A single, empowered person who works directly with the team to determine what to build. <\/li>\n<li>Does the product owner have a product feature backlog? Is that backlog prioritized by business value? Is it estimated by the team?<\/li>\n<li>Track work with a burndown? From that, can you derive a velocity?<\/li>\n<li>Hands off during an iteration?  &#8220;Nokia has a rule that you can&#8217;t have a project manager interfering with the team in the middle of an iteration because that stops the self organization.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Jeff&#8217;s been saying for years that if you don&#8217;t have a backlog, you don&#8217;t have Scrum.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing we lost in the acquisition process was our product owner. From there the rest deteriorates. Without a strong, empowered product owner the backlog becomes arbitrary and so does planning work against that backlog. See what that does to talented developers used to fueling themselves on intrinsic motivation.<\/p>\n<p>It will be at least as hard to re-build these practices as it was to build them in the first place.
